A few days ago I received the $5,000 cheque from Soya World (So Nice) in Burnaby, BC. There was a lovely letter with it congratulating us and indicating that the folks at So Nice will follow this blog to share our adventure in spending the dough on our sustainable goals. Really, everthing about this company has been classy since Day One!
We aren’t ready to spend it yet. The snow is just starting to melt in a big way here, leaving our yard a big wet, mushy pile of dirt. The ground is still frozen and the thought of putting up a sign right now is a bit alient to me. But I had to do some thinking about where to park the money in the meantime.
I originally thought I’d stick it in a term deposit with a 30 day term, but, of course, rates are abysmal and have been for years. After carrying around the cheque for a few days I finally decided just to put it in our regular chequing account. At least there, it keeps our minimum balance way above where it needs to be to avoid the monthly banking fees!
I really wanted to take a picture of me with the cheque, but I never managed to arrange it. I did think I might get somebody in the line at HSBC’s ATM to take a photo with my cell phone, but when I turned around the gentleman behind me looked a little off and, well, smelled a bit funny. In fact, I’m pretty sure he was just in the enclosed ATM foyer for the warmth. So no photo.
I think in May I will start thinking about spending a little of that cash on an entrance sign. Still thinking about how to make that sign as eco-friendly as possible….
