Our research and simple math shows that the Delica isn’t all that fuel efficient; worse even than our Nissan truck. I guess since we will be getting our oil for free, this probably doesn’t matter too much, except that it means we have to gather more oil. Chris started searching for other deisel vehicles that can be converted to WVO and came across the Toyota Surf (Hilux) which is essentially the Toyota Rav, but made with a deisel engine. It was never available in North America.
I’ve learned a few other things. Import laws restrict the age of the car to 15 years or older from Japan. If it were a North American vehicle we’d be incredulous. But, because the Japanese don’t drive their cars the way we do, many of these vehicles have very low kilometers and are very clean.
On Wednesday we are tentatively scheduled to go to Armstrong to check out an import dealer recommended by Ed Beggs of Plant Drive.
Chris has also found a Surf in Kamloops that has a blown engine…and he’s found an enginer for it that’s for sale…I see the potential for lots of cursing in the shop over the next few months.

Our friend Todd drives a Surf – he swears by it! Re: the age of the car, when we bought our trusty and beloved Mazda Friendee Bongo it was already 8 years old but had less than 5000 kms on it… Those kinds of cars are everywhere here. There just aren’t the huge highway drives that you get in Canada.
