On September 17, 2014 the Kamloops Beekeepers has its monthly meeting. Helen, Chis and I hope to be there. I’ve been gently pushing to get bees for years now but since I’m allergic to bee stings I haven’t felt I could do it myself. Talking somebody else into it was a struggle, too. BUT Helen is interested and now Chris, too! They found an open source site where there are instructions to build a bee hive, but also the plans to wirelessly monitor the bee hive once built! More after the 17th!

Hi, I just thought I’d share some interesting beekeeping info with you since you’ve expressed interest in starting up. If you haven’t already built your own system, there is an ingenious new hive invention which greatly reduces the (bee and human) labour costs, and stress to the bees involved. I’m not affiliated with the project at all, but just thought it was brilliant after seeing its fundraising campaign–judging from their goal compared to what they raised, evidently a lot of people are interested. Its called the “Flow Hive.”

Yes, we saw the funding tornado over the Flow Hive. I also found it very interesting. I had some misgivings about it and have done a bit more research. If you google it and look for responses from a variety of sources, there are some valid arguments to be made about how it doesn’t address some issues. I’ve decided to keep watching them…it’s a neat idea but even the company who came up with the idea admits it hasn’t been tested enough. It will be interesting to see where it goes. 🙂
